The search for information on how to repair my own body took me down to one significant clue: that the way you rebuild a body that has been systematically worn down by a combination of bad diet, not getting enough sleep, not getting enough rest and exercise is…one cell at a time.
Now, that’s good news and that’s bad news because there are a lot of cells, but the good news is that it’s common knowledge today that a body replaces itself totally every seven years. So, the one thing we’re counting on here is the fact that the body you have right now is not the same body you had seven years ago. Looks pretty much the same, but not exactly. Notice there are some changes as people do age, but the bottom line is that there is a genetic blueprint that will constantly attempt to do the very best it can do to fulfill its destiny, limited only by the quality of the replacement parts it’s given to work with.
If you had a building that was falling apart and all you had was balsa wood, you could get a contractor to put that wall up with balsa wood, but it wouldn’t stand up very well to a tropical storm—but if you had the original replacement parts and you had somebody with the original blueprint, you could actually make a building bigger and stronger, and it would last. It would actually be better than it was years ago.
So, the good news was: if we could figure out what would provide the closest thing to a genuine replacement part on a cell-by-cell level, and if we started introducing that into a diet, that, ideally, in seven years from now we’d have a much healthier body. And there would be some improvements along the way.
Now, that was very interesting because, when you start researching into the nutritional field, there is so much confusion out there, there is so much hobby-horsing, and by that I mean practitioners and researchers who get hung up on one thing and that’s the cure-all for everything—techniques and systems that proclaim to be the only answer. If you were to line up all the “only answers”, you could fill a stadium with the “only answers” and they each say all the other answers are wrong.
So, I thought each one of these guys must have a bit of truth, and I had to make a decision: am I going to study each one of them thoroughly and try to find the needle in the haystack that each one provided and somehow put something together or should I just start from scratch?
It turned out that what I ended up doing was finding those researchers who seemed to have a much better grasp because they weren’t into a single solution—they were into the scientific method. Certainly Dr. Francis Pottenger, who was an endocrinologist in Pasadena back in the 30’s-40’s, devised the most standard scientific studies. His protocols will stand up to any scientific study scrutiny. He did his experiments on cats, and the reason he used cats is that, in those days, all the endocrinologist studies were being done on cats and they proved themselves in humans.
So, he said let’s see what happens with cats. He put cats all on various diets. Starting with healthy cats, he put one third of them on a natural diet. In other words, he let them out in the fields at night and they went and they had field mice and rats and whatever else cats eat. And then he had another group and he gave them a diet that consisted primarily of cooked meat and pasteurized milk. And he had a third group where he added to that diet their equivalent in body weight of white flour and sugar.
Then he observed these cats, and what he observed was that the cats that had their natural diet produced healthy young. As he got further and further away from the healthy diet, he got young who were further and further away from ideal health.
The cats who were on the cooked food diet and the white flour, white sugar diet—within three generations their offspring were practically incapable of surviving. They had all kinds of degenerative disease, they had dental problems, they had neurologic disorders. He even noted that the cats were manifesting “psychiatric disorders,” i.e. mental illness.
Ever see a mentally ill cat? Well, let me tell you, the idea of a mentally ill cat in my experience is a sick cat. It’s a cat that has a physical illness. They do strange things. Cats are usually very loving and caring for their offspring. These cats were ignoring them, being very nasty to them, killing them. Problems. And just out of humanity, he stopped the experiment at that point. But, he took the surviving cats of that last group and put them immediately on the natural diet. It took seven generations of those cats that were still capable of reproducing—and many of them, by the way, had lost their capability of reproducing—to restore that seventh generation to the health level of the first generation of cats.
So, when you take a look at the fact that a human body replaces itself every seven years, we have some idea that—if we actually start doing the right thing with a human we can gradually improve that person’s health, because we’re giving the body the best possible parts—parts that the body can use as genuine replacement parts, and it will gradually repair the cells generation after generation after generation after generation.
My body’s a perfect example of this because I was almost dead in 1991. I couldn’t even walk down the hall without having to rest for 20 minutes because of the spasms, pain and exhaustion I’d be in. Today, I bicycle 6-10 miles a day just to celebrate what I’ve done.
